Ecotourism

WHAT IS ECOTOURISM?

Ecotourism is a form of responsible tourism that focuses on exploring and appreciating natural environments and wildlife in a sustainable and environmentally responsible manner.

It takes place in unique and fragile ecosystems, which is why the primary goal of ecotourism is to promote conservation and sustainable development.

Ecotourism activities typically involve small groups, local guides, and immersive experiences that allow visitors to learn about the environment and its inhabitants. These activities include wildlife watching, snorkeling, and cultural exchanges with local communities.

Through ecotourism, we can preserve the environment for future generations by providing economic benefits to local communities.

ECOTOURISM WITH SEA TURTLES IN BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR

Ecotourism with sea turtles in Baja California Sur has recently risen. It is an initiative of coastal communities inspired by their long-term collaboration with Grupo Tortuguero de las Californias in their scientific monitoring activities to protect and conserve sea turtles.

Through this collaboration, the communities obtained training in the scientific monitoring of sea turtles and now are part of the governmental monitoring permits and licenses to work with this endangered species.

These communities' initiative to carry out sea turtle ecotourism allows tourists to participate as observers in the scientific monitoring activities of sea turtles.

HOW SUPPORTING SEA TURTLE ECOTOURISM CAN BE CRUCIAL FOR BYCATCH REDUCTION

Supporting ecotourism activities with sea turtles can have several advantages:

  1. Conservation: Ecotourism activities can financially support sea turtle conservation activities. This can include funding for research, monitoring, and protection efforts.
  2. Awareness: Ecotourism activities can raise awareness about threatened species and their conservation needs. For example, by observing sea turtles in their natural habitat, people can develop a deeper appreciation for these animals and understand the importance of protecting them.
  3. Economic benefits: As the economic benefits become apparent, such as generating new income through sea turtle ecotourism, coastal communities may become more motivated to continue protecting this species.
  4. Education: Ecotourism activities can provide educational opportunities for visitors to learn about sea turtles' biology, behavior, and conservation needs. This can help promote a greater understanding of protecting these animals and their habitats.
  5. Sustainable development: By promoting responsible and sustainable tourism practices, ecotourism can simultaneously help protect the environment and improve the economy of local communities in the long term.

Supporting ecotourism activities with threatened species, such as sea turtles, can provide multiple benefits, including increased conservation efforts, awareness, economic benefits, education, and sustainable development.
